About Julian:
Julian is the youngest artist in our Featured Artist Series but has a lot of potential. He is a self-written, self-produced artist. Occasionally he uses beats he finds online, but, for the most part his work is 100% original. He only has one track out for the public to hear so far but is busy working on his first big project, entitled PRE. He says that the project will “surpass expectations.” The project is due out in a few weeks so stick to Smoothwaves for all the updates.

What got you into music, and hip hop specifically?
“Basically just listening to hip-hop all of my life; It wouldn’t feel right for me to do anything but help people experience good music.”

Last album you listened to? And favorite song right now?
“Last album? YC The Cynic by GNK . Favorite song would be “Atmosphere” by Became.”

What sets Present apart from the pack?
“My style and perspective really. I, as an individual, can bring a perspective that very little people have ever had before.”

A Look Back at Kanye’s Albums Through The Years

Today is the 10th anniversary of Kanye West’s debut album College Dropout. Some argue that it is Kanye’s greatest album ever. It’s easily one of the greatest debut albums by any Hip-Hop artist in this generation. Other than Nas’ Illmatic, College Dropout might be the best. Take a look at the graphic we made above and stay tuned for any news related to the rumors surrounding an alleged 8 track album soon by Kanye.

Young & Upcoming Artists of 2014. Featuring Joe Dias. Pt. 1 of 3

Name: Joe Dias
Hometown: Lynnfield, Massachusetts
Age: 18
Genre: Unclassified, influences of pop, hip-hop, and electronic.
Reminds us of: Mike Posner and Frank Ocean.
Background Info:
He goes to Lynnfield High School, where he played football. He plays   guitar for his buddy “psanders” and has opened for Sammy Adams and Jake Miller. Joe wouldn’t be where he is today without the support of his friends and family. Before we get underway he’d like to shout out Franc, Devoe, Lucas, Sayheim and Marc.

Versatility and Influence.
Joe is a very versatile artist, he plays guitar, bass, piano and drums, as well as having an outstanding singing voice. He is a self written, self produced performer.  The biggest influence and inspiration for his music is his sister Gianna. She was the one who got him started posting online. Sadly, she passed on after a battle with cancer, at age 15, he said he  “does it all for her.”

Do you have any upcoming projects?
” Yes! Some music videos and an EP titled “Reality.” My sister came up with the title before she passed away and I’ve been working on it for over a year now. It’s a concept album on how cruel and random life and the world can really be…This EP is like my baby.”
**Smoothwaves is excited to announce that we’re partnering with Joe on the release of his EP!**

What sets Joe Dias apart.
“I’m trying to bring the realness back to music. Too many artists out there are  buying beats online, trying to mimic other artists. I’m myself. I hope people won’t be able to compare me to any famous artist. I want to be me. I want to share the story of my sister. I want to prove to the world that the kid all the teachers gave dirty looks in class and thought wouldn’t ever make it can, and will.”

Last album you listened to the whole way through?
“Frank Ocean – Nostalgia, Ultra . It’s one of those albums that can just take you to another place and time.”
Favorite song right now?
“Cheer up-Skizzy Mars. My friend Danielle got me to check him out. “

Pt. 1 of Who We’re Looking Forward to in 2014.

Starting with Joey Bada$$, his 2012 mixtape 1999 more or less pronounced the then 17-year-old, king of New York hip-hop. Since then he’s released a few other mixtapes, including Summer Knights, that have been met with good reviews. B4 Da $$ will be his first official retail album and has garnered a lot of attention and hype. 2014 will be a big year for Joey BadA$$ and his Pro Era crew.

One of the projects I’m looking forward to the most is Schoolboy Q’s ‘Oxymoron.’ With fellow TDE member Kendrick Lamar more or less dominating all of hip-hop and rap in 2012 and ’13 with good kid mAAd city and his verse on Big Sean’s Control, Schoolboy is about to come through with some heat. He has said that his album needs to be “as good or better” than k dots. Being as good as GKMC would be an impressive feat, either way it will definitely be one of the top albums of 2014.

The sky is the limit for Skizzy Mars and Jon Waltz. Both are independent young rappers, Skizzy dropped his first album last year, Phases, and Jon Waltz finished the year with a string of singles that were very impressive, LNIA, FNIA & Bang. Both rappers have stated on Twitter that 2014 will be their year. Let’s hope that this is true and they grace our ears with their presence soon.
