The bedroom producing, angsty singing, lo-fi aesthetic of Mac Demarco has influenced a seemingly endless stream of copycats. Most of whom are very good, however that doesn’t distract from the over saturation of the genre. That being said, Orange County seems like he’s cut from the same cloth but somehow comes across as fresh and original. Similar to Yellow Days, a young producer/ singer from the UK, Orange County, the singer is able to convey a wonderfully melancholy yet upbeat sound that demands listeners to tap their toes a long to the beat. He has reportedly been seen in the studio with BADBADNOTGOOD (fingers crossed, that would be beautiful), but no official word on a collab is out yet.
For his first release of 2017 he drops off a gem titled “Best Friend.” The song has a West Coast beach vibe accented by his soaring (you can picture him sitting while singing this, even during the high notes), yet grounded voice. Give it a listen below and stick with us for more from the 18 year old English singer.
Mick Jenkins delivers an excellent music video for his track “Drowning.” Featuring the jazz trio BADBADNOTGOOD, Mick sends a very powerful message with this video regarding racial tension in America. This song is one of the lead singles off of his upcoming album The Healing Company, which is due out September 23rd. Be on the lookout and don’t miss out on the video below.
The four young, towel-clad individuals that make up the experimental jazz group BadBadNotGood, released their album IV today and it is nothing short of expectations. With big names such as, KAYTRANADA, Mick Jenkins and Colin Stetson tied to this project, the final product could’ve taken on any sound. BBNG demonstrate a new dynamic sound, but don’t abandon raw instrumental talent that got them this far. Check out IV below.
For his latest release Mick Jenkins hops on some wild production from BadBadNotGood, WeThemPeople and Kaytranada. Mick has cooked up some serious heat from all three of these producers and “The Artful Dodger” is no exception. Check out the single below.
TheSenseiBlue’s short yet super intoxicating track “On the World” was released back in October, but just got a fresh new rebirth thanks to Mick Jenkins and BADBADNOTGOOD. Shoutout to Mick for, one, putting the original “On The Map” on the map for me because it has some seriously cool vibes and, two, doing such an elegant job with this cover. “On The Map” is a very nice piece on its own, but it is also such a perfect base to build upon. Jenkins remains true to the original feel while inserting his own signature touches that end up seamlessly expanding and enhancing the track. Check out the cover and the original’s music video, which is “as wavy as it gets” according to the top YouTube comment, below.
