Wake up: It’s 2017 and rap is still homophobic, the Migos aren’t too exited about Makonnen coming out

EDIT: The Migos just issued this statement:unspecified-2

Atlanta rapper/singer Makonnen, previously known as iLoveMakonnen recently took to Twitter coming out as gay. A lot of Twitter users reacted to the news positively, sending their best wishes to the rapper who had the club going up in 2014 and was once signed to Drake’s label OVO. However, on the flip side of things, the Migos aren’t yet ready to give their best wishes to Makonnen. In an interview with Rolling Stone, writer Jonah Weiner commented on Atlanta’s diversity and asked the trio how they felt about it, here’s the full excerpt:

“And so I’m surprised by Migos’ reaction when I mention iLoveMakonnen, the local MC who just came out as gay on Twitter. “Damn, Makonnen!” Quavo bellows after an awkward interlude. I mention support I saw online for Makonnen’s decision. “They supported him?” Quavo asks, raising an eyebrow. “That’s because the world is fucked up,” says Offset. “This world is not right,” Takeoff says. “We ain’t saying it’s nothing wrong with the gays,” says Quavo. But he suggests that Makonnen’s sexuality undermines his credibility, given the fact that “he first came out talking about trapping and selling Molly, doing all that. He frowns. “That’s wack, bro.””

It’s also important to note that the Migos used a racial slur against Chinese people on a song off of Culture titled “Get Right Witcha.” It is also easy to forget the homophobic nature of rap because homophobic slurs don’t find their way into the music as much as they have in the past and rappers PR teams help to make sure that nothing is said to cause a stir. But just because you’re not hearing it doesn’t mean it’s not there. Hopefully others in the rap game come to Makonnen’s defense and chastise the Migos for their headass comments, until then I’ll sit back and listen to “Trust Me Danny” on repeat.

Skepta, Makonnen and Céon team up on “Coming Soon”

skepta_nxzzgx

This is… interesting. Not used to hearing Skepta go in over a beat like this or rap like this. Somewhere in between MADEINTYO and Lil Yachty. After the first few listens I’m not super into it but it seems like one of those songs that will grow on me as the summer progresses. We’ll have to see. For now, take a listen to “Coming Soon” below and let us know how you feel about it.

iLoveMakonnen & Lil’ B link up for “Can’t Let It Go”

Who saw this shit coming?! Especially right at this moment. Makonnen calls upon the internet legend, the Based God himself, Lil’ B. The northern Cali based rap artist has only accounted for a handful of features in the past year and a 63 track mixtape titled Thugged Out Pissed Off. Makonnen does his thing to start the track off and it just takes off from there. This shit actually bangs and is over 6 minutes long. Bump this in the whip and expect even more from the Based God in the very near future.

After the release of his iLoveMakonnen2 EP last month, Red Dragon Makonnen is back with some heat. “Live For Real” does nothing but slap, it’s perfect for tonight’s party. Produced by Richie Souf this one is a typical Makonnen track, and I’m not complaining. Listen below.
