Jamila Woods is a whole hell of a lot more than the girl singing on Chance’s hit song “Sunday Candy.” Her newest tape Heavn is one of the most refreshing projects I’ve listened to this year. She explains the tape very well in the Soundcloud description:“HEAVN is about black girlhood, about Chicago, about the people we miss who have gone on to prepare a place for us somewhere else, about the city/world we aspire to live in. I hope this album encourages listeners to love themselves and love each other. For black and brown people, caring for ourselves and each other is not a neutral act. It is a necessary and radical part of the struggle to create a more just society. Our healing and survival are essential to the fight.” The project features a list of Chicago’s current best, Noname, Saba, Donnie Trumpet, and yes, Chance The Rapper. Give this a listen below and love yourself a little more.
Saba, Smino and Legit come through today with a warm weather jam that should be listened to outside. In celebration of his upcoming tour with Jazz Cartier in Europe, Saba decided to drop off “World In My Hands.” This reflective track really highlights how far Saba has come in a fairly short period of time. Give it a listen below.
Releases from Noname Gypsy seem to come very sporadically, but they always hit the spot. This time she teams up with SPZRKT for “All I Need,” in preparation for her upcoming tape Telefone (which is gonna be sooooo so good, trust me). The song was produced by a trio of Chicagoans consisting of THEMpeople, Saba and Phoelix. NoName might be best known for her collaborations with Chance The Rapper and Mick Jenkins but she should be on your radar for her solo stuff as well. Both she and Phoelix sing about romance on this jazzy production and the end result is something that everyone can get down with. Keep an eye out for Telefone and enjoy “All I Need” below.
Chance The Rapper comes back as a solo act on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to debut his latest single “Angels” featuring another Chicago artist Saba. This sounds just what you would expect from a follow up to Acid Rap. Don’t miss out on this hot track. Be on the lookout for more on Chance’s third mixtape and stream “Angels” below.
Chicago’s Sleepy Ace, previously part of One Dope Alliance, just hit us with their latest song “DPV.” The song features some very dope production from OnGaud and smooth lyrics from Sleepy, Swuave and Saba. Stream it above and enjoy.
