Smooth Waves Music Week in Review- 11/23-11/30

Carlos Serrano’s mashup of Sam Smith and Kanye West:
With all of the technology at everyone’s fingertips these days, mashups are often overlooked. It’s not that hard to do. However, it’s hard to make one this good. Carlos Serrano blends together Kanye’s “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” and Sam Smith’s “Tell Me I’m Not The Only One.” The final result is literally perfect. Listen for yourself below.

Action Bronson and J. Cole both announce albums coming soon:
J. Cole came out of nowhere this past week and announced that he’s releasing an album on December 9th. Forest Hills Drive 2014 will be the rapper’s third studio album. Following up the release of Born Sinner, Cole is looking to prove to critics that he has what it takes to produce a quality album.

Bronson has been working on this album for quite a while now, and, with a slew of very good mixtapes to his name, we’re expecting a lot from this debut. The album artwork and track listing should be out in the near future.

Ferg decided to stick to his word and release his latest mixtape, Ferg Forever, on Black Friday. The whole tape is a banger and obviously it is worth the download. He even is able to get MIA on the “Let It Go Part 2” jam, so be sure to download this here on Datpiff.

Big Sean Tops Billboard With “IDFWU”
In the past week, Big Sean’s lead single from his upcoming, yet-to-be-named, album, “IDFWU” reached number one on Billboards Hip-Hop and R&B Charts. This is quite the feat, especially because the song is so explicit. Be sure to catch the video below, and keep an eye out on more information on his latest album, coming very soon.

Smooth Waves Music Week In Review 11/3-11/9

WEEKINREVIEW2.jpg

Jack Larsen- “ur gone” ft. Young Lungs

Smooth Waves artist Jack Larsen came through earlier this week with a new song called “ur gone.” The record features a nice verse from Young Lungs of Waterloo, Canada. “ur gone” is everything you need for some late night, sentimental listening. Vibey, ambient and intoxicating, this one will be in our rotation for awhile.

T-Pain- “Stoicville”

T-Pain is back in the game. This time, without auto-tune. “Stoicville” is a soulful single that could easily be called the underdog’s anthem. T-Pain will also be dropping an album under the same name that he’s dedicated to his son, who has a severe case of autism. This new T-Pain is nice and we’re hoping he won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

Big Sean- “IDFWY” Ft. Kanye West and E-40

This is one of the corniest videos we’ve seen in awhile. Friday Night Lights meets cheesy radio single. You can catch Big Sean dancing around the football field as a high school quarterback while a stoic Kanye West patrols the sideline and E-40 commentates from the booth. This one’s pitiful, c’mon Big Sean.

Spazz & Reelo- “Over Here”

Smooth Waves artists Spazz and Reelo, of ASA, blessed the internet this past week with a new track titled “Over Here.” CMPLX produced a gem of a beat which Spazz and Reelo dance over with ease. Check this one out below.

Migos- Rich Nigga Timeline.

Street heat. Ratchetness. Bangers. Migos has a little bit of everything in there most recent mixtape, tastefully titled Rich Nigga Timeline. The tape can be downloaded via datpiff below.

Jaden Smith- Prakruti EP

Jaden Smith, everyone’s favorite internet presence, dropped off a 3 song EP titled Prakruti in honor of Kendall Jenner’s birthday. The EP was surprisingly decent, which I guess is to be expected considering his dad is Will Smith and he’s got all the resources you’d ever need to make a mixtape. Stream Prakruti below.

Domo Genesis- Under The Influence 2

Other than a few singles and the Camp Flog Naw Carnival in LA, the Odd Future collection has been relatively quite recently in terms of music. Domo Genesis changed all that earlier this week with the release of Under The Influence 2. It is exactly what you would expect from Domo and his smoking habits. Each track is worth listening to so be sure to stream it below.

Earl Sweatshirt- “45” (Produced By The Alchemist)

Speaking of Odd Future, it seems like Earl is gearing up for the release of his next album. The Alchemist provides an extremely short but very sweet beat that Earl does his thing on. Do not hesitate to press play below.

Schoolboy Q- “Hell Of A Night” Official Video

Q hit us with a video for one of his standout tracks off of Oxymoron, “Hell Of A Night”. It is an interesting visual that goes with the mood of the track extremely well. Check out the whole thing below.

Kevin Abstract- “Hell/Heroina”

Kevin Abstract unleashes a dark new video for his record “Hell/Heroina”. The video fits in nice with the vibe of his MTV 1987. He shows no signs of slowing down in the near future and we can’t wait to see where he goes from here.

Earrly Mac- “#LikeKanye Remix” Featuring Chuck Inglish & Bizzy Crook

The steam is rolling with this track and the remix that features Chuck Inglish and Bizzy Crook makes it that much better. We can’t wait for his new project but “#LikeKanye Remix” will tide you over until then. Stream below.

Smooth Waves Music Week In Review

WeekInReviewNov1.jpg

On this week’s edition of The Week In Review we take a look at a lot of quality music from a wide variety of artists that we’ve been listening to lately. From Mardi Lex to Nas, Smooth Waves has the past week covered.

Nas- The Season

It was cool to see Nas flow over such an old track from J. Dilla, RIP. Very reminiscent of old school New York hip hop. Who knows what this one will end up on in the future. Take a listen below.

Earrly Mac- #nextroom

Earrly Mac has continued to catch our attention with his fresh new sound and overall vibe. The track below is slowed down and tells the listener a story about slaying in the room adjacent to your homies. We can definitely relate to the situation that Earrly Mac brings to light.

Lil’ Wayne- “Gotti” ft. The Lox

Instead of the Carter V Lil Wayne drops off a very mediocre song. Not much to say about this one, Wayne falls flat and The Lox fail to impress as well. Give it a listen below and who knows when we’ll get Tha Carter V.

Theophilus London- Vibes

Who would have thought that Theophilus would have an album that’s in contention for the best of the year. The record was executive produced by Kanye, so all of the beats are fire. Theophilus also creates a wild, almost cinematic experience for the listener by having tracks weave in and out like scenes in a movie. Stream the full album below.

SMOOTH WAVES ARTIST Mardi Lex- “Spark”

Fresh off the release of LIFE RHYMES, the boi Mardi is back with some flames. “Spark” is an uptempo song that doesn’t slow down for a second. Peep the single below and stick with us for all news Mardi Lex.

Ro Ransom’s Ro Ransom Is The Future

Here’s JW’s review of RRITF, definitely an interesting read.

REVIEW

Curtis Williams- “A Rap About a Girl”

Curtis Williams came out of nowhere this week with a brand new track titled “A Rap About A Girl.” We were caught off guard when we saw a very rare image of Lindsay Lohan posted up as a perfect 10 as the single artwork. Who cares what she was putting up her nose awhile ago, she could really get it. Before we get too off track, here’s “A Rap About a Girl.”

Hyype- “Will Smith”

No one cares what you were for Halloween. Hyype IS Will Smith. The Chicago rapper put out a video accompanying his brand new track “Will Smith.” New music from Hyype is always something we look forward to. Peep the video below.

Also, here’s our Halloween Playlist:

Smooth Waves Sticker Logo-3

This is a little segment we’ll be doing every Sunday called “Smooth Waves Week in Review.” We’ll repost some of the best songs of the week, most newsworthy events and our favorite albums and mix tapes among other things. This week we take a look at a slew of mix tapes and some big news from Penthouse Music.

This past week was filled with good mixtapes. Most notable was Curtis Williams’ Danco James mixtape. The tape features the likes of Juicy J, Wiz Khalifa and Danny Seth. Curtis absolutely killed this project, look for the tape to be on our best of the best list later in the year.

Another hot mixtape was Curren$y’s Saturday Night Car Tunes. Spitta randomly dropped off the tape which features Wiz Khalifa, Gun Play, Birdman and more. Pilot Talk 3 is also supposed to be coming out soon.

Download the 7 track EP here.

Before last Sunday night we hadn’t even heard of Joey Green, a rapper from the DC area. However, after listening through is Manifesto tape several times he won our ears over. The project consists of 12 tracks and you can check it out below.

Penthouse Music shared some very big news with the music world this past week when they announced that they would be adding Toronto artist Lais to their team. To welcome Lais to Penthouse they released a song with a feature front the Penthouse king Skizzy Mars called “For You.” Check it out below and check out Lais’ Soundcloud. The future is very bright for Penthouse.
